Total ChatGPT citations tracked, August 2026
Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations, August 2026
Reddit's citation share, relative change Jul → Aug
Reddit's rank among cited domains, August 2026
This wasn't a general slowdown. ChatGPT cited 23% fewer sources overall, but Reddit's citations fell 66%, roughly three times faster than the overall decline.
ChatGPT Didn’t Narrow Its Sources: The average number of citations per domain barely moved, about 4.4 in July, about 4.5 in August. The pool of domains and total volume shrank evenly across the board. Reddit’s drop is the outlier, not part of that pattern.
Still #1, by About 40 Citations: nih.gov earned an estimated 1,990 citations in August against Reddit’s 2,030, the closest race yet. Next month could see a new top domain.
| 1. reddit.com | 1.24% |
| 2. nih.gov | 1.22% |
| 3. shopify.com | 1.16% |
| 4. hubspot.com | 0.87% |
| 5. google.com | 0.80% |
ChatGPT's overall citation volume shrank between July and August. The question isn't whether Reddit dropped too. It's whether Reddit dropped more or less than that overall decline.

Down from 2.83% in July, a 56% drop
Total citations (212,621 to 163,181)
Unique domains cited (48,231 to 36,635)
Reddit fell 43.1 points further than the average decline, the steepest gap of any domain in this set. Platform and marketplace sites moved the opposite direction: LinkedIn rose 73%, YouTube 92%, and Amazon 23% against the same baseline.
Reddit was the clear outlier. Despite being a major community-driven source, its share dropped well past the overall average, matching the same broad decline in ChatGPT’s use of Reddit content reported industry-wide in mid-August.
Editorial and trade press also lost ground, but less severely. Forbes (-29.0 pts) and TechRadar (-22.5 pts) declined more than the average, though nowhere near as steeply as Reddit.
| 1. reddit.com | -42.6 pts |
| 2. techradar.com | -22.5 pts |

Reddit matters more to some businesses than others. Here's what kind of website ChatGPT was actually citing Reddit for, across everything we track.
Ecommerce sites take the biggest hit. More than half of every Reddit-driven ChatGPT citation we track belongs to an ecommerce brand, by far the most exposed group.
