Reddit Citations Are Dropping in ChatGPT

Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell sharply between July and August 2026. This report tracks the shift and compares it against ChatGPT's overall citation decline over the same period.

This chart shows Reddit’s citation share across four AI platforms during the selected data period. Use it to identify which platforms are shifting away from Reddit and where visibility is holding steady.

What This Data Reveals

In July, 1 in every 35 sources ChatGPT cited was a Reddit thread. By August, it was 1 in 80.

🔥 Key Finding

This wasn't a general slowdown. ChatGPT cited 23% fewer sources overall, but Reddit's citations fell 66%, roughly three times faster than the overall decline.

ChatGPT Didn’t Narrow Its Sources: The average number of citations per domain barely moved, about 4.4 in July, about 4.5 in August. The pool of domains and total volume shrank evenly across the board. Reddit’s drop is the outlier, not part of that pattern.

Still #1, by About 40 Citations: nih.gov earned an estimated 1,990 citations in August against Reddit’s 2,030, the closest race yet. Next month could see a new top domain.

July 2026 vs. August 2026: What Changed

ChatGPT's overall citation volume shrank between July and August. The question isn't whether Reddit dropped too. It's whether Reddit dropped more or less than that overall decline.

Reading the shift

Overall ChatGPT citation volume dropped 23.3% from July to August, so every domain was going to show some decline in raw mentions. The useful comparison isn’t “did it drop.” It’s “did it drop more or less than that 23.3% average.”

🔥 Key Finding

Reddit fell 43.1 points further than the average decline, the steepest gap of any domain in this set. Platform and marketplace sites moved the opposite direction: LinkedIn rose 73%, YouTube 92%, and Amazon 23% against the same baseline.

Reddit was the clear outlier. Despite being a major community-driven source, its share dropped well past the overall average, matching the same broad decline in ChatGPT’s use of Reddit content reported industry-wide in mid-August.

Editorial and trade press also lost ground, but less severely. Forbes (-29.0 pts) and TechRadar (-22.5 pts) declined more than the average, though nowhere near as steeply as Reddit.

Which Domains Beat the Average Decline

Overall ChatGPT citations fell 23.3% month over month. Numbers show how far each domain’s own change was from that baseline, not from zero.
