Most teams plan content based on what they think their audience wants. That’s how you end up competing for the same keywords as everyone else. I use ChatGPT to find missing topics that users truly search for, but nobody ever wrote about them on the web. And when you do it right, this is one of the fastest ways to build topical authority in AI search.
My process for finding content gaps
1. Start with a clear base
I start by defining who I’m targeting and what outcome I’m trying to drive. The more specific the audience I’m visualizing, the better gaps I can find.
2. Give ChatGPT a real context
With ChatGPT, I share the website, competitors, audience, and existing content, so ChatGPT has enough context to find gaps that actually make sense.
3. Look for opportunity signals
Then I look for topics competitors missed, questions they answered weakly, or angles the audience still needs help with.
4. Verify the search demand
I always validate the ideas in GSC, Ahrefs, or Semrush, because a good gap still needs real search demand behind it.
5. Publish, measure, and repeat
Finally, I publish the strongest ideas, track how they perform, and use that data to find the next set of gaps.
6 ChatGPT prompts I use to find content gaps
1. Content gap analysis against competitors
Act as a senior SEO strategist. Analyze the topic: [TOPIC] My website covers: [PASTE EXISTING CONTENT OR CONTENT LIST] My competitors cover: [PASTE COMPETITOR URLs OR CONTENT LIST] Identify: 1. Missing topics I have not covered 2. Missing subtopics within existing articles 3. Questions competitors answer that I don’t 4. High-intent keywords I’m missing 5. Content opportunities likely to attract AI citations 6. Recommended priority order based on impact Present findings in a table.
Why this prompt works: Here I didn’t ask ChatGPT to just find the content gaps. Instead I provide my content and my competitors’ content to let it identify the differences based on real data. Furthermore, the table format helps prioritize opportunities, giving me a clear, actionable content roadmap instead of a random list of ideas. The biggest advantage is point #5. By asking for AI citation opportunities, I can find topics where strong sources are missing and create content that has a better chance of being surfaced in AI answers.
2. Topical authority gap finder
Act as a topical authority expert. I want to become a recognized authority on: [TOPIC] Generate a complete topical map. For each topic cluster provide: – Core topic- Supporting topics – Beginner content- Intermediate content – Advanced content – Expert opinion content – Case study opportunities – Research opportunities – FAQ opportunities Highlight content gaps most websites fail to cover.
Why this prompt works: Here I’m asking to build a topical cluster around my topic to identify where my coverage is strong, weak, or missing with broader coverage. I set the beginner, intermediate, advanced and expert structure to know what content I need at each stage. This will help to ensure I’m building real topical authority before publishing surface-level articles. Lastly, I added the ‘highlighting content gaps that most websites miss’. This helps uncover overlooked topics, unique angles, and research opportunities that can differentiate my content and strengthen my authority.
3. Question gap discovery
Act as a search intent researcher. Topic: [TOPIC] Generate: – 50 unanswered user questions – 25 expert-level questions – 25 comparison questions – 25 decision-making questions – 25 troubleshooting questions – 25 emerging trend questions Rank them by content opportunity score.
Why this prompt works: This prompt helps me uncover the real questions my audience is asking across every stage of their journey. I’ve added six categories that cover different search intents, from informational and comparison queries to decision-making, troubleshooting, and emerging trends. It gives me a complete content roadmap with all covering areas. The main gap lies within unanswered questions. These are often the gaps AI systems need sources for, creating opportunities for my content to become a cited authority. Setting up score ranking helps me prioritize the highest-impact topics first, so I can focus on content most likely to drive visibility, authority, and traffic.
4. Expert insight gap finder
Act as an industry expert. Review the following content: [PASTE ARTICLE] Identify: – Generic advice – Missing expert perspectives – Missing examples – Missing case studies – Missing frameworks – Missing data – Missing predictions – Missing contrarian viewpoints Suggest additions that would make this content genuinely expert-level.
Why this prompt works: It helps me improve content I already have, making it one of the fastest ways to increase quality and authority without starting from scratch. Most articles cover the right topics but lack depth and expert insights. So this prompt helps to quickly identify missing examples, case studies, frameworks, data, and perspectives that can make content more valuable. I’ve added contrarian viewpoints and predictions sections because they encourage AI for deeper insights. I use this prompt before publishing or when I want to update existing articles to strengthen authority and earn citations.
5. Content opportunity prompt
Act as a world-class SEO strategist, content marketer, AI SEO specialist, and industry researcher. Industry: [INDUSTRY] Website: [WEBSITE] Target audience: [AUDIENCE] Goals: [GOALS] Perform a complete content gap analysis. Deliver: 1. Keyword gaps 2. Topic gaps 3. Competitor advantages 4. AI citation opportunities 5. Featured snippet opportunities 6. FAQ opportunities 7. Content clusters 8. Research opportunities 9. Expert opinion opportunities 10. High-conversion content opportunities Prioritize opportunities by: – Traffic potential – Revenue potential – Ranking difficulty – AI visibility potential Create a 90-day content roadmap.
Why this prompt works: This is my content growth strategy prompt. By analyzing my industry, website, audience, and goals together, it helps uncover keyword gaps, topic gaps, competitor advantages, AI citation opportunities. Next, I evaluate opportunities based on traffic potential, revenue potential, ranking difficulty, and AI visibility potential. This helps me focus on initiatives that drive real business impact, and the 90-day roadmap turns those insights into a clear, actionable plan.
6. SERP gap mining prompt
Act as an SEO analyst. For the keyword: [KEYWORD] Predict the current top-ranking content. Identify: – Over-covered topics – Under-served topics – Missing perspectives – Missing statistics – Missing examples – Missing expert commentary – Emerging trends not covered Generate 20 content opportunities capable of outperforming existing results.
Why this prompt works: I use it to analyze the entire SERP, so that I can identify what top-ranking content is collectively missing. By highlighting both overcovered and underserved topics, it shows me what to avoid and where I can differentiate with unique perspectives, examples, statistics, and expert commentary. This is valuable for AI SEO because AI models favor specific, authoritative, and citation-worthy content. The 20 content opportunities helped me create content that stands out from competitors and has a better chance of ranking and earning AI citations.
My mistakes → your learning
❗ Don’t blindly follow ChatGPT without cross-checking
I know ChatGPT predicts gaps, but always confirms and validates the facts before writing because it can generate false information sometimes. So it’s better to cross-check before proceeding further.
❗ Try to fill every gap
This is the real thing that I learned from my past experience: not everything needs to be done. What I mean is, do not try to fill every gap you discover. Only address the gaps that align with your niche depth and audience intent. Focus on what really matters and what aligns best with your goals.
❗ More traffic keywords = right audience
“High volume means high competition” is what I used to think, but in reality, it is not true. A 200-search keyword that converts can beat a 10,000-search keyword that bounces. So write for your audience with proper research on their pain points and what they are looking for.
❗ Created blogs for every related / similar topic
I used to create multiple blogs around similar topics to build topical authority. Instead, writing a one definitive post with clear depth and research helps more.
❗ Never update my content
I’ve learned that not updating content is a major mistake. Last year’s content is outdated and does not provide any updated insights. AI models prefer updated content and de-prioritize stale content. So updating existing ones helps instead of creating new ones from scratch.
