What this data reveals

Reddit is the only domain here that behaves the way its global reputation predicts, holding 1.24% share in August, more than 3x the next-highest domain. Every other domain on this list underperforms what you’d expect from its industry-wide standing.

🔥 Key Finding

LinkedIn (0.38%) and TechRadar (0.37%) are essentially tied for second. Together with Amazon (0.30%) and Forbes (0.25%), professional and trade-press sources fill most of the middle of this list, while Wikipedia and the two newswires, Reuters and Business Insider, sit at the bottom.

Wikipedia’s weak showing is the most telling result here. It barely clears Business Insider and Reuters despite usually being one of ChatGPT’s top 2 sources globally. Encyclopedic, definitional content isn’t what gets cited when ChatGPT answers a product or service question, that role goes to community discussion (Reddit), professional networks (LinkedIn), and trade press (TechRadar) instead.

Reuters and Business Insider tie for last, both at 0.09%. General news outlets aren’t where ChatGPT looks for the commercial, comparison-driven prompts your brands are tracked against.

These 9 domains combine for only 3.07% of your total ChatGPT citations. That’s expected, this is a fixed reference list, not your top 10 by volume, so the domains actually driving most of your citation share sit outside this set entirely.

Reading the shift

Overall ChatGPT citation volume dropped 23.3% from July to August, so every domain in this set was going to show some decline in raw mentions. The useful comparison isn’t “did it drop”, it’s “did it drop more or less than that 23.3% average”.

🔥 Key Finding

Every platform and marketplace domain here (LinkedIn +73%, YouTube +92%, Amazon +23%) gained relative share, while both publisher/editorial domains (Forbes, TechRadar) lost ground faster than the -23.3% average. Reddit, the platform with the most community/UGC content, is the one exception, and its drop lines up with the documented industry-wide ChatGPT-Reddit pullback in mid-August.

Editorial and trade press lost the most ground. Forbes and TechRadar each dropped 22 to 29 points past the average decline.

Everything else held steady or gained. Wikipedia, Business Insider, and Reuters barely moved, all within a few points of the baseline, while Amazon, LinkedIn, and YouTube each gained more than 20 points against it.

Which domains beat the average decline

Overall citations fell 24% month over month. Numbers below show how far each domain’s own drop was from that 24% baseline, not from zero. A domain that fell only 11% is +13 points ahead of the average, even though its raw mentions still went down.
