An AI Visibility Score is a composite metric that quantifies how often and how prominently a brand, website, or piece of content appears across AI-generated search responses. It typically factors in mention frequency across a defined set of test prompts, the platforms on which mentions appear, whether the brand is cited as a primary source or mentioned in passing, and the accuracy of the information included. Different tools calculate this score differently, but the intent is the same: to give brands and agencies a single trackable number that represents their standing in AI search, the way domain authority or average rank position represents standing in traditional SEO.
AI Visibility Score calculations vary by tool, but the most common methodology involves defining a representative set of prompts relevant to a brand’s category, running those prompts across one or more AI platforms at regular intervals, analyzing the responses for brand mentions and citations, weighting mentions by factors such as platform reach, position in the response, and citation type, and aggregating the weighted results into a single score. Some tools also factor in sentiment and accuracy. The specific formula matters less than the consistency of the methodology over time, since the score’s value is primarily in tracking directional change.
A good AI Visibility Score is relative to your competitive set and the maturity of your AI SEO program. A brand that appears in 40 percent of relevant prompts across three major AI platforms is performing meaningfully better than one appearing in 10 percent, but whether 40 percent is good depends on what the category leaders are achieving. Early-stage monitoring often surfaces baseline scores of 5 to 20 percent for brands that have done no deliberate AI SEO work. Well-optimized brands in strong authority positions can achieve scores above 50 percent for their core query sets. Tracking improvement over time is more strategically useful than benchmarking against an absolute threshold.
Why it matters: Without a score, AI search performance is invisible. The AI Visibility Score is the reporting anchor that makes this channel measurable and comparable over time.
