Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of optimizing content to perform well inside answer engines like Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, and Google’s AI Mode. It is closely related to GEO but predates it slightly in terminology, and the two terms are often used interchangeably. AEO places heavy emphasis on structuring content around specific questions, using clear and direct language, and establishing the kind of topical authority that makes an AI engine trust your source over others. FAQ schema, concise paragraph structure, and factual precision all play a role.
AEO and GEO describe the same fundamental goal through slightly different lenses. AEO is the earlier term, focused on ensuring content surfaces as the answer in answer engine results. GEO emerged from academic research and is more precise in describing optimization for the generative output step specifically, rather than just retrieval. In practice, the two disciplines overlap almost entirely. Both prioritize direct question-answering, content authority, structured formatting, and source credibility. Using either term in a strategy context will be understood by practitioners, though GEO is the more technically precise framing.
Why it matters: AEO and GEO are not replacing SEO. They are the next layer on top of it. Brands ignoring both are already losing ground to competitors being cited in AI answers.
