Prompt Testing

What is Prompt Testing in SEO?

Prompt Testing is the practice of manually or programmatically running a set of queries through AI search platforms to evaluate how a brand, product, or topic is represented in the generated responses. A basic prompt test might involve entering relevant category and brand queries into Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Mode and recording whether your brand appears, where in the response it appears, and how it is described. At scale, prompt testing is automated across hundreds of query variations and run on a recurring schedule to detect changes in visibility over time.

How do I run prompt tests to check my brand’s AI visibility?

Running prompt tests starts with building a prompt library: a defined set of queries organized by category, including generic category questions, problem-based queries, competitor comparison queries, and use-case-specific questions. For each prompt, you run it through the AI platforms you are monitoring, capture the full response text, and record: whether your brand appears, the context in which it appears, whether a citation link is included, and how competitors are mentioned. Doing this manually is feasible for a library of 20 to 30 prompts. Beyond that scale, automation is necessary to maintain consistency and track changes reliably over time.

Why it matters: Prompt testing is the most direct way to understand what AI is saying about your brand right now. It is the starting point for any AI SEO strategy.
