Passage Indexing is a Google algorithm capability that allows individual passages or sections within a page to be indexed and ranked independently of the page as a whole. Rather than evaluating only the overall topic of a page, Google can identify a specific paragraph or section that directly answers a query and surface it in search results, even if the rest of the page is about something adjacent. This means a well-written, highly relevant passage buried within a longer article can still appear prominently in search results without the entire page being a perfect topical match.

Passage Indexing and AI retrieval share the same underlying logic: both systems identify the most relevant portion of a page rather than treating the entire document as one undifferentiated unit. In AI search, the retrieval system extracts the passage that best matches the query and feeds it to the language model for synthesis. Pages that are structured with clear, self-contained sections are easier to passage-index and easier to retrieve. Good heading structure, focused paragraphs, and clear topic segmentation are beneficial for both traditional passage indexing and AI content extraction.

Why it matters: If your page is well-structured, individual sections of it can become citation sources for AI answers even when the overall page is not a precise topical match for the query.
