Featured Snippet Optimization is the practice of structuring content to appear in Google’s featured snippet position, the highlighted answer box that appears above the standard organic results for certain queries. Featured snippets are triggered by question-based queries and typically pull a concise definition, list, or step-by-step answer directly from a high-ranking page. They were the clearest precursor to AI-generated answers and remain a significant visibility position. Optimizing for featured snippets involves answering the target question directly in the first paragraph, using the question as a subheading, and keeping the answer between 40 and 60 words for paragraph snippets.
Featured snippets remain important for two reasons. First, they continue to appear for many queries, particularly those where Google does not generate an AI Overview, and still drive meaningful clicks. Second, the optimization practices that earn featured snippets are nearly identical to those that improve AI citation likelihood. Content that is direct, factually precise, and formatted to answer specific questions performs well for both. Brands that have historically invested in featured snippet optimization are already better positioned for AI search than those that have not, because the content structure they built is already aligned with AI retrieval preferences.
Why it matters: Featured snippet and AI Overview optimization are the same discipline applied to two adjacent surfaces. Winning one tends to improve your position for the other.
