Topical Authority

What is Topical Authority?

Topical Authority is a measure of how comprehensively and credibly a website covers a specific subject area. A site with high topical authority on AI search, for example, would have deep, interlinked content covering every relevant angle of that topic: definitions, how-to guides, comparisons, case studies, and current developments. Search engines and AI systems use topical authority as a signal of source quality. A site that covers a topic shallowly or inconsistently is less likely to be selected as a trusted source than one with a clear, extensive, well-organized body of work on the subject.

How do I build topical authority for AI search?

Building topical authority requires creating a comprehensive content ecosystem around your core subject area rather than targeting isolated keywords. Map out every relevant subtopic and question your audience cares about, then systematically create high-quality content for each one. Internal linking between related content pieces signals to both search engines and AI systems that your site treats the topic as a whole rather than in fragments. Over time, consistent publication, content updates, and external citations from reputable sources build the cumulative authority that makes your domain a preferred citation target for AI-generated answers.

Why it matters: AI systems favor sources that demonstrate deep expertise across a subject area. A site with 50 thorough, interlinked pieces on one topic will consistently outperform a site with 500 shallow, disconnected articles on many topics.
