ClaudeBot

What is ClaudeBot?

ClaudeBot is the web crawler operated by Anthropic to collect web content for use in training Claude models and powering Claude’s web retrieval capabilities. It identifies itself with the user agent anthropic-ai or Claude-Web and respects robots.txt disallow directives. Anthropic discloses its crawler in its usage policies, and site owners can configure access on a per-crawler basis. ClaudeBot’s crawl behavior is consistent with standard web crawler etiquette, including rate limiting and honoring crawl delay settings.

How does ClaudeBot crawl websites?

ClaudeBot crawls websites by sending HTTP requests to publicly accessible pages, parsing the HTML content to extract text, following internal links to discover additional pages, and indexing the content for Anthropic’s training and retrieval systems. It identifies itself clearly in the user agent string so site owners can identify its activity in server logs. Like other AI crawlers, it is focused on text content and prioritizes pages that are cleanly structured and accessible. Blocking ClaudeBot via robots.txt will prevent Anthropic’s systems from accessing and indexing your content for use in Claude’s responses.

Why it matters: If your brand wants to appear in Claude’s responses, allowing ClaudeBot access is a prerequisite. Blocking it effectively removes your content from consideration for Claude’s answer generation.
