Content Freshness Signals are the indicators that tell search engines and AI systems how recently a piece of content was published or updated. They include the publication date and last-modified date in the page’s HTML, the date metadata in structured data markup, the crawl frequency data that crawlers have observed over time, and the recency of external links and citations pointing to the page. AI systems use freshness signals to assess whether a source’s information is likely to still be accurate, particularly for topics where facts, statistics, or conditions change over time.
Publishing date affects AI search citations in two ways. For retrieval-based AI search, systems often prioritize recently published or updated content on topics where recency matters, such as current events, product features, regulatory changes, and market data. For training-based model knowledge, the cutoff date determines what information the model has internalized, but retrieval can extend that knowledge with more current sources. Keeping core content pages updated with accurate dates, refreshing statistics and examples periodically, and signaling updates through structured data LastModified fields all help maintain freshness signals that improve AI citation likelihood.
Why it matters: Stale content is a liability in AI search. A page last updated two years ago is at a disadvantage against a competitor whose content was refreshed last month, even if the underlying information is similar.
