FAQ Schema

What is FAQ Schema?

FAQ Schema is a specific type of structured markup that labels question-and-answer pairs on a webpage so that search engines can parse them directly. Each question and its corresponding answer is tagged in a format that Google and AI crawlers can read independently from the rest of the page. Historically, FAQ Schema unlocked rich result appearances in Google SERPs. In the AI search era, it serves a more direct function: AI systems can extract individual Q&A pairs and use them when composing answers to matching queries, making FAQ Schema one of the most practical technical investments for AI search visibility.

Does FAQ Schema still work in the AI search era?

FAQ Schema remains one of the most directly applicable structured data types for AI search performance. While Google scaled back its display of FAQ rich results in traditional search in 2023, the underlying value of FAQ Schema for AI retrieval is unchanged. AI systems, including Google’s own AI Overviews, parse structured Q&A content to identify direct answers. A well-implemented FAQPage schema tells the AI system exactly where the question is and exactly where the answer is, removing the interpretive work required to extract that content from unstructured prose. That clarity is valuable regardless of whether it triggers a visual rich result.

Why it matters: FAQ Schema is essentially pre-formatting your content for AI retrieval. If your answer matches the query closely and the schema is clean, you have a strong chance of being the cited source.
