AI Mode (Google)

What is AI Mode in Google Search?

AI Mode is a dedicated search experience within Google that generates fully conversational, multi-turn AI responses to queries rather than showing the traditional results page. Unlike AI Overviews, which appear above standard organic results, AI Mode is an entirely separate tab in Google Search where users get an experience more similar to chatting with an AI than browsing a search engine. It was introduced in 2025 and represents Google’s most direct response to query volume shifting toward platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Mode and AI Overviews serve different user intents and produce different experiences. AI Overviews appear automatically above organic results for certain queries on the standard search page. AI Mode is a separate, opt-in tab that takes over the entire search experience with a conversational interface, follow-up question support, and deeper synthesis. AI Overviews are designed for quick answers on existing search journeys. AI Mode is designed for users who want to explore a topic more deeply without leaving the Google interface.

Why it matters: AI Mode represents a higher-engagement AI search behavior. Users in AI Mode spend more time with generated content and are more likely to click cited sources when they want to go deeper.
