Context Window

What is a Context Window in AI?

A context window is the maximum amount of text an AI model can process in a single interaction, measured in tokens, where a token is roughly three to four characters of text. A model with a 128,000-token context window can read and reason across approximately 100,000 words at once before it runs out of space. Smaller context windows mean the model can only process shorter documents or conversations before older information falls out of its active memory. Context window size varies significantly across models and directly affects how much of a long page or document an AI can read and use.

How does context window size affect how AI reads my content?

When an AI crawler or retrieval system processes your pages, it typically extracts a portion of each page to include in its context when generating a response. If your most important information is buried deep in a long page, it may fall outside the portion the model has room to process, reducing its chance of being cited. This is why content structure matters: key claims, definitions, and answers should appear near the top of the page or in clearly marked sections that retrieval systems are likely to prioritize. Front-loading value improves the odds that the AI reads and retains the most important parts of your content.

Why it matters: A long page full of valuable information is only as useful as the portion an AI can actually process. Structure and hierarchy are not just UX considerations; they are AI retrieval considerations.
