Traditional search works by crawling and indexing the web, then ranking pages based on signals like relevance, authority, and user behavior, and presenting that ranked list to the user. AI search works by taking a query, retrieving relevant content from the web or an index, and generating a new synthesized response. The output is fundamentally different: traditional search gives you a map to find information; AI search gives you the information itself. The implications for publishers and brands are significant because the click is no longer the default outcome of a search.
AI search is not replacing Google in the near term, but it is changing what Google is. Google itself is one of the largest AI search platforms through AI Overviews and AI Mode. At the same time, platforms like Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, and Microsoft Copilot are capturing meaningful query volume, particularly from younger and more technically-oriented users. The market is fragmenting rather than consolidating around one alternative. Brands need to think about AI search not as a replacement for Google visibility, but as an additional channel with its own distinct optimization requirements.
Why it matters: The question is not whether to take AI search seriously. It is how quickly you build the practices to perform in it before your competitors do.
