Gemini Search

What is Gemini Search?

Gemini Search refers to Google’s use of its Gemini family of large language models to power AI search features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Gemini is the underlying AI that reads, reasons across, and synthesizes web content to generate the answers users see in Google’s AI-powered search experience. It is also available as a standalone assistant at gemini.google.com. The Gemini models range from lightweight versions for faster queries to larger, more capable models for complex reasoning tasks.

Is Gemini the same as Google AI Overview?

Gemini is the AI model, and AI Overview is the feature it powers. The distinction is similar to the difference between an engine and the car it runs. Gemini is Google’s language model, developed by Google DeepMind. AI Overviews is the specific product experience in Google Search that uses Gemini to generate and display answers. When you see an AI Overview on a search results page, Gemini is what produced the text, but the feature and the model are distinct things.

Why it matters: Most users do not know that Gemini powers their Google AI answers. This matters for brand strategy because optimizing for Gemini’s citation preferences is the same as optimizing for AI Overview inclusion.
